This Baroque style mid-1800s Portuguese desk or centre table with brass mounts on its feet, around the drawers and freeze are typical of the period's tradition to create contrast with the dark woods. The beautiful contrasting grain is pronounced all the more around the intricate carvings that surround this piece's careful configuration and lustrous patina of the solid Jacarandá (also known as rosewood) that makes up the body of the piece, while the sucupira (Brasilian chestnut) single plank top provide a solid even consistent dark top. The turned and trembled legs were all characteristics of a style that emerged in the late 18th century and became notion as Portugals' "national style" and are usually featured in entrance halls/foyers of prominent homes.
