Sarouk L-J3791
Description
Woven in lustrous wool on a cotton foundation, the pile has that unmistakable Sarouk quality: dense yet incredibly soft, with a subtle sheen that catches light in a way that almost reads silky. This is the result of exceptionally high-quality wool and finishing techniques that give Sarouk rugs their signature velvety surface and longevity.
The composition centers around a classic floral medallion arrangement—an expressive tree-of-life style layout with scrolling vinery, palmettes, and layered botanical forms. Sarouk rugs are known for their refined, curvilinear floral designs, often developed in workshop settings where artisans created more intricate, balanced compositions than village weavings. Here, the design feels slightly diffused, almost painterly, giving it a softer, more romantic presence.
What makes this piece especially compelling is the palette. Traditional Sarouks are typically recognized for their saturated reds, deep blues, and ivory grounds.
Pieces in this kind of quiet, desaturated palette are far less common on the market; most were either originally produced in stronger tones or later overdyed to meet mid-century demand. Finding an early example that has naturally softened into this kind of coloration is increasingly rare.
